2020 Cinco de Mayo Virtual - Enjoy from Home Event Recap
We missed seeing everyone in person on Saturday, May 2, but our special virtual Cinco de Mayo – enjoy from home event was a success! We used Facebook to execute a variety of different activities that folks could enjoy from the comfort of their home. Click here to visit our Facebook Page.
Our day started off with watching the 2019 parade video. We enjoyed reflecting on the beautiful colors and community participation from last year’s parade.
We then held a virtual car truck, and bike show, and over 45 participants submitted pictures of their vehicles! Viewers were able to vote on their favorites and declare a “People’s Choice” winner in the car, truck, and bike categories. Our winner in the car division was Joe deLeon from Minneapolis with his 2003 Nissan 35oz. Tom Mikkelson from Golden Valley was our winner in the truck division with his 1951 Chevy Pickup. Finally, Hunter Morrison was our winner in the bike division with his Alabama Crimson Tide Bike named, “Bama Nation.” All of the car, truck, and bike pictures have been posted to a photo album on our Cinco de Mayo Facebook Page so viewers can still check out all the awesome vehicles! A big thank you to Post Consumer Brands for sponsoring!
Our last scheduled activity was a Facebook Live performance by Expresión Tropical Band. During this exciting performance we raised over $1,300 for Neighborhood House! Neighborhood House is a staple in the West Side Community and provides free essential services around food, housing, and education that help struggling families meet their needs. Currently, Neighborhood House is seeing increased costs and demand due to the COVID-19 crisis. Viewers can re-watch the performance on our Facebook page!
In between our scheduled events we announced the West Side Community Organization Westsider of the Year, heard from Cinco de Mayo Committee Member, Debbie Luna, learned how to make margaritas at home thanks to Altos Tequila USA, enjoyed a special message from Councilmember Rebecca Noecker, and enjoyed song and dance break activities from the YMCA and the Teddy Bear Band.
We can’t wait to celebrate with you in person again and hope that day comes soon! Stay healthy and safe!
